How to check your EPF balance and UAN as an outsourced employee

A step-by-step guide to finding your UAN and checking your EPF balance through the EPFO portal, UMANG app, SMS and missed-call services.

If you're an outsourced employee working in a UP government department, your Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) contribution is one of the most important benefits you're entitled to — and one of the easiest to lose track of, especially if you've changed agencies or postings. Here's exactly how to check it.

Step 1: Find your UAN

Your Universal Account Number (UAN) is a permanent 12-digit number issued when your first EPF account is created. It stays with you for life, even across different employers or agencies. Check your salary slip, appointment letter, or ask your agency's HR/accounts contact if you don't already know it.

Step 2: Activate your UAN (one-time)

On the official EPFO member portal, use the "Activate UAN" option with your UAN, name, date of birth and registered mobile number. You'll receive an OTP to set up your login.

Step 3: Check your balance online

Once activated, you can check your balance in any of these ways:

  • EPFO member portal: Log in and view your passbook, which shows monthly employee and employer contributions.
  • UMANG app: Search for "EPFO" inside the app, then "View Passbook" using your UAN.
  • Missed call service: Give a missed call to the EPFO's registered number from your UAN-linked mobile for an SMS with your latest balance (available if your UAN is linked with Aadhaar and bank details).
  • SMS service: Send an SMS in the specified format from your registered mobile number to receive your balance details.

What to do if your balance looks wrong

If contributions are missing or don't match your pay slip deductions, this usually means your agency hasn't deposited that month's contribution yet, or there's a mismatch in your KYC details. First raise it with your agency's accounts team in writing; if it isn't corrected within a reasonable time, escalate through the official grievance channel.

Keep this information safe

Note down your UAN somewhere secure, and never share your EPFO password or OTP with anyone claiming to "help" you check your balance over phone or messaging apps — EPFO staff and agencies will never ask for your password.
